A Day at the Utah State Capitol
Yesterday Evidence and Artifacts: Facing Autism was exhibited in conjunction with the Utah Legislative Coalition for People with Disabilities Legislative Reception. We are hopeful that legislators came away with a renewed commitment to supporting people with Disabilities — especially individuals and families affected by autism spectrum disorders. We also attended the Senate Business and Labor Committee hearing for SB 55, proposed legislation to mandate insurance coverage for the treatment of autism spectrum disorders. The room was packed and many people had a lot to say about the issue. If you are interested, please listen to the hearing here. We were especially moved by the profoundly compassionate comments by Senator Karen Mayne at 36:07. The bill is headed to the senate floor next week.
There was quite a lot of media coverage —
SaltLake Tribune – Bill that would mandate Utah coverage for autism treatment clears committee
ABC4 – Utah health insurance companies one step closer to having to pay for autism treatment
KSL – Lawmaker’s bill would require insurers to cover autism treatments
Fox13 – Bill would require insurance coverage for autism treatments
KUTV2 – Bill Mandating Coverage Of Autism Treatments Passes Committee
KUER 90.1 Autism Insurance Mandate to be Considered by State Senate
